LICEO SCIENTIFICO STATALE “LICEO GAROFANO”, Capua - ITALY

The Liceo “Luigi Garofano” is a public upper secondary school located in Capua, a town in the south of Italy, in the province of Caserta, only 40 km from Naples. Built in 856 AD on the banks of the Volturno - the longest river in southern Italy - at the junction of the Via Appia and Via Latina, on the site of the Roman harbour of Casilinum, present-day Capua was founded by the inhabitants of the ancient Roman city called Capua, which was abandoned after a violent incursion by the Saracens. The school is just 700 metres from the beautiful and well-preserved Renaissance bastions that still protect Capua city centre and it lies in an area rich in historical sites, such as the Royal Palace of Caserta (Unesco World Heritage Site) and the Roman Amphitheatre of ancient Capua, which is second only to the Coliseum in size.

The Liceo “Luigi Garofano” is a rather large school, counting almost 1400 students, aged between 14 and 19, and 112 teachers. The school staff includes eighteen school janitors, an executive secretary, seven clerks and three technicians.
